Day in and day out you’ll hear marketers tell you that social media should be one of your top priorities for legal marketing in 2019 and beyond. In fact, we’ve written multiple blog posts geared towards helping your social media campaigns take off! But do you really NEED social media? While Facebook and Twitter can be profitable, they’re not a good fit for every law firm. Here are some reasons why you may not want to dive into social media marketing:
1. You Practice a Niche Area of Law
Pretty much everyone has heard of personal injury attorneys and has worked with one or knows someone who’s worked with one in the past. But what about lesser-known areas of law, like employment law? While thousands claims are filed every year in niche areas of law, it’s unlikely that these claimants are finding law firms to work with on Facebook.
2. Your Industry Isn’t About Sharing
Social media is all about promotion and sharing what’s happening within your business. This may not be a good fit for Social Security disability claimants, who often have very personal cases. You may not be able to promote your victorious claims on social media without giving away sensitive information if you’re a Social Security disability attorney.
3. Your Audience is Too Old
According to Pew Research Center, only 55% of adults age 50+ use Facebook, and just 14% use Twitter. This may be fine for personal injury attorneys, but Social Security disability attorneys need to find older claimants to ensure a case will be approved by the SSA. If your target audience isn’t using social media, there’s no point in investing your time or efforts there.
4. You Don’t Know What You’re Doing
Sometimes, less is more. All too often businesses will create a Facebook account and upload a profile photo but have no idea where to turn after that. If you’re not well versed in social media marketing, you may do more harm than good by trying to run a Facebook account and promote your legal services on social media. This is especially true if you’re in a saturated area of law, like personal injury or workers’ compensation.
5. There Are Better Options
Why invest so much time and effort in social media when there are so many more affordable options that will generate far more traffic to your website? PPC and SEO are two obvious choices for law firms, as are more traditional marketing platforms like TV ads and billboards. While all of these marketing platforms will require some effort on your end, you may find that it’s easier to sign clients with options aside from social media.
Lead generation is also a great option for attorneys who aren’t getting the case volume they need on their own.
